Purpose

The Adult High School (AHS) program at Lighthouse High provides an opportunity for adults who are no longer enrolled in public high school to complete the necessary coursework and state assessments required to earn a standard high school diploma. Program requirements adhere to the standards established by the State of Florida. Instruction for AHS students is based on the Florida adult education course descriptions and the Florida Standards outlined in the secondary course descriptions. Students must fulfill all state and local graduation requirements unless exempted under section 1003.4282 (7)(b), F.S.

Accommodations

In compliance with federal and state legislation, accommodations must be provided for students with disabilities to ensure equal access to education. Adult students with disabilities must self-identify and formally request these services. Accommodations may be necessary in areas such as instructional methods and materials, assignments and assessments, scheduling and time management, learning environments, assistive technology, and specialized communication systems. Documentation of requested and provided accommodations must be maintained in a confidential file.

Documentation of the accommodations requested and provided should be maintained in a confidential file.

Standards

Except as provided elsewhere in law, the graduation requirements for adults shall be the same as those for secondary students. To obtain a standard adult education diploma, a student must earn either the standard 24 credits or 18 credits under the ACCEL option, maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA and successfully complete all required statewide exams (or concordant or comparative scores in respective courses) in accordance with State of Florida guidelines.

Program Structure

Instructional methodologies may include, but are not limited to, traditional lecture instruction, competency and performance-based adult education, distance learning and computer-assisted instruction.
